Take THAT Garden Critters and Hello There Katy!

As part of our master plan to keep critters and grasshoppers from munching on our green beans, hubby and I built a screen box out of old window screens and placed it over the newly planted green bean bed. The poor little guys were hardly out of the soil and something was already munching on them. THIS should fix ’em! We’ll remove it when the bean plants start to flower. We are really hoping to squeeze in this last planting and if all goes according to plan…we should have plenty of green beans in about two months. NOW let’s see who’s going to win the war!

I almost forgot to show you all the newest addition to the garden. We had an old mailbox in the barn and I wanted to put it in the garden so I’d have a place to keep all of the little things I tend to lose when I’m gardening. Last week, hubby dug the hole and in it went! It’s right at the entrance to the garden. Isn’t it wonderful? And it is oh-so handy. I love it!

And now I’d like to introduce you to Katy, the katydid. Original, huh? Yesterday, as we were getting in the truck to head up to the other end of the property, this bugger scared the daylights out of me when I closed the door and looked out the window! Katy did not want to get off of the side view mirror and ended up going along for most of the ride until we stopped the truck right next to a branch that she could hop on to. That was actually my very first katydid sighting ever.

Hope everyone had a great weekend! Let’s attack this week and really mean it!

About finefrugality

I am a wife, mother, business owner, farmer, foster parent, retired probation officer and so much more. :-) I love to save money any way I can. I just don’t see the sense in handing my cash over to someone else when I don’t have to. I coupon, I grow and can food, I reuse and repurpose items, I scour thrift stores and during the warmer months, my Saturday mornings consist of yard sales and our local farmer’s market with my husband. I have organized local meetings which include coupon swaps, barter clubs and swap meets. Here is where I begin to share this life with the rest of the world. This is Fine Frugality. Because being frugal is not only fine. It is FINE.

Nice work- we ended up putting wire mesh over a number of the beds. It really works…and over time it pays off…and “passive” defenses feel a little bit better….

    • We didn’t know what else to do! We tried all of the homemade sprays and Neem oil. We were starting to lose more than we harvested. I’m hoping this will at least take care of the beans. I’m glad to hear it worked for you, that’s encouraging!
