Photo-A-Day Challenge ~ Something That Makes You Sad

Well, here it is folks…the last of this month’s photo challenge subjects. “Something That Makes You Sad”. Other than the obvious things like death, sickness, injuries etc., one thing that makes me really sad is when you work your tail off on a project and something comes around and destroys all of your hard work.

We grow everything in our garden organically. That takes much more work than if we would simply take a can of pesticide and spray it all over our plants. We have to pick bugs off of our plants, place containers of beer in our beds, mix up homemade concoctions as pest deterrents, make our own compost and mulch and weed, weed weed…then weed some more. It is a ton of work. Especially given the large size of our garden.

Then comes along mildews and pests and blights…ready to wipe out our precious plants. And despite the fact that we arm ourselves with any and all organic weapons we can google, sometimes they win and we lose. We lose precious food. I’ll admit, it has made me cry. We have battled tomato blight for the last two years. We won the first time around, but unfortunately…last year the blight was victorious. We got very few tomatoes. We did everything right, rotated the garden beds, trimmed the plants and tried every organic remedy we could find with unsuccessful results. The blight hit too early and with full force. This makes me sad. 😦

Mother Nature can sure kick some butt at times, but Vicki and Noel are once again prepping for anything she has to dish out. Bring it.

Thank you Fat Mum Slim for hosting April’s Photo Challenge. It has been fun!

About finefrugality

I am a wife, mother, business owner, farmer, foster parent, retired probation officer and so much more. :-) I love to save money any way I can. I just don’t see the sense in handing my cash over to someone else when I don’t have to. I coupon, I grow and can food, I reuse and repurpose items, I scour thrift stores and during the warmer months, my Saturday mornings consist of yard sales and our local farmer’s market with my husband. I have organized local meetings which include coupon swaps, barter clubs and swap meets. Here is where I begin to share this life with the rest of the world. This is Fine Frugality. Because being frugal is not only fine. It is FINE.

Mother Nature can sure play games with our garde3ns. We have had to replant several things this year. Depend on the garden to help keep down food costs.

  2. I’m not familiar with the beer thing. What do you do?

We got destroyed by blight last year too. Heartbreaking.
